Christmas Break Schedule

Christmas Break Practice Schedule, 2010/2011

Parents & Swimmers:

Christmas break is here! This is the MOST important training time of the year. This is where the guys push the hardest and get in shape for the remainder of the year. These two weeks can make or break a swimmer’s season, and we want to give the team the best possible chance for success!

With the size of our team, it is impossible to effectively train in a 6 lane pool. Since we will be at multiple locations (Calvin and Ottawa Hills) over the two weeks of Christmas break, we divided the team into different practice times so that all 34 guys are not in the water at the same time. The Sprint group will be doing some weight lifting at GRCHS.

Each week (12/20-24 and 12/27-31) will consist of 5 practices, Monday through Friday, for a total of 10 practices. We have had issues with the start time in the past. Over the break, the time that it says the practice starts means that is the time that athletes need to jump into the water. So, if your practice starts at 11am, you will want to allow some time to change and get on deck. If you aren’t jumping in the water at 11am, you are late.

All these practices are also posted on the Team Calendar.

Here is the schedule for 12/20-24:

Monday/Wednesday (Calvin)
A + B: 3pm to 6pm
Sprint: 1:20pm to 2:30pm (weight room), 3pm to 5pm (pool)
Divers: 2:45pm to 6pm

Tuesday/Thursday (Calvin)
A + B + Sprint: 3pm to 6pm

Divers: 2:45pm to 6pm

Friday (Ottawa Hills)
Sprint: 9:45am to 10:45am (weight room)
A, B, & Sprint: 11am to 2pm, (last hour is Alumni Water Polo)

Divers: 12:30pm to 2pm

Here is the schedule for 12/27-31 (all at Ottawa Hills):

Parents: New 2 You Sign-Up

Parents:
Our swim team has a wonderful opportunity to raise money for expenses by working at the New 2 You Shoppe. We have committed to working on Friday nights in January. We need three adult volunteers each Friday night, and one of them must be male. The volunteers will work from 4:00-7:30pm. In return for our efforts we are guaranteed $100 per night or 50% of the proceeds for that evening. This generally exceeds the $100 mark.

This is a great way to show your support for our swim team and help raise money at the same time. Please consider volunteering. You can sign up by leaving a comment below (click here) or email the webmaster (webmaster@eaglesaquatics.com) with your contact information and the date on which you'd like to volunteer. The webmaster will then add your name to the schedule below. If you have any questions, please contact Beth VanPortfliet by email at djvanportfliet@comcast.net.

Click here to view the schedule on a separate page.

Parents: Concession Stand Schedule

Parents,
Our team is required to staff the concession stand at the Quest Center on three dates this Winter. We have assigned each athlete's parents to a specific date. If your assigned date is not convenient for you, please use the schedule to arrange a trade with another parent. You can find parent contact info here. If you have any questions, please contact Beth VanPortfliet by email at djvanportfliet@comcast.net.

Don't forget to wear a hat!

Dessert Social Sun-28-Nov

Our first social event will be to welcome all new swimmers and divers to the Grand Rapids Christian boys swim and dive team! We are planning a dessert social on Sunday evening, November 28th, from 6-8pm. This event will include coaches, athletes, and their parents and siblings. The Pruis' have graciously agreed to open their home for this event. We wanted to do this early in the season so we could all get to know each other before the swim meets begin. Go Eagles!!!

The Pruis' address is 1211 Old Lake Ct., Grand Rapids, MI 49545. Please do not park in the circular drive at the Pruis' as we will need this area to exit when we leave. Here's a map.

Dessert and beverages will be provided, and parents don't need to bring a thing. We are looking forward to meeting the new members and hope all will be able to attend. A flyer will also come home with the boys from practice on Monday, the 22nd. Some of the new families have not signed up on the website yet so please help spread the word.

Looking forward to seeing all of you!!!

Practice Sat-27-Nov *NOT* Split

We had originally announced that Saturday's practice would be of the "split" variety. Now it will not. All swimmers should be on deck at 10:00am. Practice ends for everyone at 12:30pm.
As a rule, once we announce a practice time on the Team Calendar, we also notify everyone if that practice changes. So if you're signed up for updates via email, Facebook, or Twitter, you'll hear about every practice change. But it's never a bad idea to check the Team Calendar page frequently.

Split Practice Details

The 4-hour practices will be split up as follows (Wed, Fri, and Sat):
  • The swimmers who swam in the 4 slower lanes of the pool at Monday’s practice should be ready to get in the pool at the beginning of the posted practice time. They will be done with practice 2.5 hours after the beginning of practice (10:00-12:30 for the 10:00 start days or 11:00-1:30 for the 11:00 start days).
  • The swimmers who swam in the 4 faster lanes in the pool at Monday’s practice will need to be on deck, ready for drylands 1.5 hours after the posted beginning of practice (11:30 for the 10:00 start time and 12:30 for the 11:00 start time). They will finish practice at the posted stop time.
This may seem a bit complex, but it will make practice much more enjoyable and beneficial for the guys because we won’t be trying to jam as many people into a smaller, wavier pool!

Please keep in mind that not all practices will be split like this.
  • Split practices will be denoted on the Team Calendar page as "Split Practice" and will follow this same pattern: slower 4 lanes start at the posted time and go for 2.5 hours; faster 4 lanes start 1.5 hours after the posted time and finish at the posted stop time.
  • Regular practices will be denoted as simply "Practice." For these regular practices, all swimmers will be expected to be on deck at the posted start time. Practice will conclude at the posted stop time for everyone.
So please refer to the Team Calendar page regularly.

A Word about our Practice Schedule

Update: These times are now confirmed and have been added to the Team Calendar page.

Tue-23-Nov - 6:30pm - 9:30pm at Ottawa Hills
Wed-24-Nov - 11:00am - 3:00pm at Ottawa Hills (split)
Thu-25-Nov - off
Fri-26-Nov - 10:00am - 2:00pm at Ottawa Hills (split)
Sat-27-Nov - 10:00am - 12:30pm at Ottawa Hills (not split)
Mon-29-Nov - 6:15pm - 9:00pm at Calvin
Tue-30-Nov - 6:15pm - 9:00pm at Calvin
Wed-1-Dec - 6:15pm - 9:00pm at Calvin
Thu-2-Dec - 6:30pm - 9:30pm at Ottawa Hills
Fri-3-Dec - 6:30pm - 9:30pm at Ottawa Hills
Sat-4-Dec - 10:00am - 2:00pm at Ottawa Hills (split)

With the 4-hour blocks of time above, we will be running two separate practices that overlap a bit, due to our large team size and the smaller size of the Ottawa Hills pool. For example, with the 10:00am - 2:00pm time, one group will go from 10:00am to 12:30pm and the other group will go from 11:30am to 2:00pm.

Split practices are explained here.

Team Sweatshirts and Social Dues

Swimmers and parents please remember to send a check for $31 with your athlete if you are interested in a team sweatshirt. The deadline is firm as the order will need to be placed soon. Please give the check to Nate Leppink payable to Gina Leppink by the end of practice this Wednesday, November 24. Sorry but no orders can be placed without payment.

Social dues would be appreciated as soon as possible. We are asking for $30 from each athlete. Social dues covers a portion of party food, hair bleach, coaches gifts, and much more. Please give your check to Nate Leppink payable to Gina Leppink. You could also mail your check to:
Gina Leppink
1847 Timber Ridge Dr. SE
Ada MI 49301
You can also hand your check to Gina at Sunday's dessert social or at any swim meet. Thanks for supporting the swimmers and divers in this way!

Spread the Word

Every athlete whether new or returning needs to get on the website and click the big blue "CLICK HERE" button. Then follow the instructions to fill out your contact information. So far, only about ten athletes have done this. Please help spread the word to all athletes that they need to do this.

Parents of first year swimmers and divers also should get on the website to get signed up on the email notification list. Parents of returning athletes who are already receiving these updates don't need to sign up again. But please help us by spreading the word to others.

How to Print Documents

Some folks have had trouble printing top times lists and other documents on our website. Here's the trick: Once you click on the link to the document, you'll see a Google docs page that shows the document. To print it, DON'T use your web browser's print function. Instead, use the File/Print option beneath the Google docs logo. Please let the webmaster know if you cannot open a document or if you're still having trouble printing it.

Cheer on the Girls Swim Team!

Tuesday, October 5 at 6:30pm is the last home meet for the Lady Eagles Swim and Dive Team at Calvin College! Coach Becky and the girls are looking for some support and help in the stand/pool deck. We are asking all available guy swimmers and divers to attend the meet to help time and cheer. It will be a close meet between the Eagles and Northview, one that was lost by 10 points last year. It is also senior night and it would be great to have fellow athletes and friends in the stands. Hope to see lots of you there!

Oakland University Summer Swim Camp

This summer, Oakland University will be hosting two sessions of summer swim camp:
Session1:June 13-18
Session II: June 20 - 25
OU’s camp is designed to teach the competitive skills necessary to swimming faster. Through stroke lectures, daily video review, as well as demonstrations from elite level college swimmers athletes will be placed in a learning friendly environment with a coach to athlete ratio of 10:1. To top it off it will all be done in a fantastic facility with the best of equipment.

If you have an interest in gaining some valuable experience in a great environment please take a look at the camp brochure or you can call 248+975.SWIM for more information. OU is offering discounts for teams that send 6 or more swimmers (5%) or 12 or more (10%). Space is limited and going fast.

Summer Swim Camp

This summer, there will be a swim camp hosted by Becky Bagnall. This will be the first ever GRCHS swim camp held by the school. This provides a number of benefits:
  1. Great opportunity to get specific, focused attention on your stroke.
  2. A viewpoint from another coach on your stroke.
  3. A week of pool time to get used to the water again.
If you are interested in signing up, take a look at the brochure. If you have questions, get in touch with Becky. Also, if you know any 8th graders that would be interested in doing the middle school program, this would be a great introduction to swimming.

Taper

Hello Parents!

We are going to be winding down the swim season for most of the guys over the next 3 weeks, and I wanted to take a minute and share with you what is happening in the pool. We start our taper this week, and it will last until the conference meet. For the current state qualifiers, their taper will start in 2 weeks.

If you're wondering what a taper is and why it's important, you're probably not alone. Basically, the idea is that we reduce the yardage and intensity of the training we do in practice until the competition that we're targeting. We will focus on more race specific things like sprinting, starts, and turns. The last few days before the meet, we won't be doing much more than warming up and doing a few sprints. The reason we do this is so that we can be rested and swim FAST!! It is an inexact science, and the results vary, but we generally are happy to see time drops of between 1 and 2 seconds per 100 yards of race length.

The most important components to a good taper are (listed in order):
  • Training. All the hard work and hours of swimming we've put in since November have been the building blocks for the taper we are about to do. In general, guys that push themselves the most in practice while swimming with proper technique are the ones that benefit most from taper.
  • Positive mental attitude. The swimmer must believe he will perform well and feel great in the water. Also, he must have a strong desire to swim fast.
  • Rest. The swimmer should refrain from strenuous activity outside of swimming during taper, get good rest at night by staying on a regular sleep schedule.
  • Balanced diet. Eat well - lots of carbohydrates, protein, fruit & vegetables. Stay away from junk food and pop.
  • Be prepared. Shave down, use a suit that isn't stretched out (creating additional drag), use goggles that you trust.
  • At the meet: Create adrenaline by getting excited to swim fast, sit down and relax before races, visualizing a great race. Think positive rather than creating nervousness and pressure upon yourself.
Expect the boys to have a lot more energy during taper....it can be tough to get them to rest because they've been wiped out every day for the last 10 weeks, and now they have energy again! Please help your son out by encouraging him and providing for some of the things listed above.

The guys have worked very hard this season! All the coaches have been continually impressed with the many good attitudes we have on this team. Thank you so much for supporting the team and your son throughout this season. We look forward to an exciting last few weeks!

Coach Keith
